Travel Guides by Young Bloggers 1: Italy, London & Paris

Hello, my dear colleagues, students, and parents! Last week I was a guest in Shavy’s classroom (Shavy’s English Hut) and we had an amazing lesson where the students learned how to write a tour guide for their favorite city through discussion, exploration, and collaborative writing. They have written articles about their favorite places in pairs and the articles you will read below are completely unedited and shared as the students wrote them.

Another task in this short project is for students to learn to be peer-editors. They have a task to follow a feedback rubric (shared at the bottom of the article) and then post their feedback as a comment on this page. My platform is read by teachers and parents all over the world, so another aim of this project is to make all our little writers PUBLISHED BLOGGERS, and spark their joy for writing in the future.

Without further ado, here are the blog posts!

Italy, country of South- Central Europe, occupying a peninsula that juts deep into the Mediterranean Sea. Italy comprises of the world’s most varied and scenic landscapes on Earth 🌎 and is often depicted as a country shaped like a boot with an extremely picturesque setting. It has an atmosphere of extreme welcomeness and hospitality as well.
The Euro is the prime currency of the country which is highly common in the entire continent. The country of Italy has a mostly Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and cold rainy winters. However, at nearly 736 miles in length North to South, Italy also has a variety of sub and micro climates where the seasonal weather can differ greatly from national norms.
Although Italy is distinct in itself, the places you can visit in Italy are humongous and utterly alluring. The country has its monuments and places to visit into two distinct parts, modern as well as historical monuments.
Italy has historic places galore. However certain notable places that are essential to be visited are-Ostia Antica , the Doge’s Palace, the ancient Colosseum , the bewildering Leaning Tower of Pisa( which gets more and more tilted by the passing day.) Mordern places-Although, Italy does not have many mordern places, there are certain places which lure the likes of people from all over the world, from far and wide and leave them jaw dropped. Venice and Lake Como being a few.
Italian food is known all over the world for its uniqueness plus for its taste which tickles the taste buds of many people. Pizza and lasagna being originating in Italy have spread all throughout the world while each country has given these cuisines their own taste still no country can quite match the taste of these delicacies made in Italy itself, therefore, they are definitely worth a try. Some other scrumptious dishes of Italy are Ossobuco, truffles, risotto and the world class coffee.

1Eiffel Tower

What would Paris be without its symbolic Eiffel Tower? Built by Gustave Eiffel to commemorate the centenary of the French Revolution, it is presented at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. 324 meters high, it is one of the most explored monuments in the world with nearly 7 million visitors a year.

The first floor houses the Eiffel Tower 58 which extends over two levels, 58 meters above the ground as its name suggests. On the second floor, the view is the best at 115 meters because you have a diving view on the ground below. Finally on the 3rd floor at 275 meters, you can see what the office of Gustave Eiffel was. For the more adventurous one, it is possible to use the stairs and climb the steps (1,665 to the summit).

The ascent of the Eiffel Tower is a must to enjoy the dazzling view of Paris.

  1. Notre Dame Cathedral

One of the most alluring symbol.  Notre-Dame de Paris, also known as Notre Dame, a Roman Catholic cathedral is located on the eastern half of the Ile de la Cité. The construction of it begun in 1163 and was fully completed in 1345, this cathedral is a sight with its portals surrounded by his many sculptures and gargoyles that adorn the roof. I advise you to walk to the top of cathedral which is maximum of 387 steps. The climb to the top of towers must be exhausting, but you will get a panoramic view of the region.

  1. Cruise on Seine

If you want to visit “ The city of Light” then you surely will have amusement on the cruise of Seine , When the sun sets, the monuments are lit slowly. You get a charismatic view  to the forefront so you can have a gala time of the beauty of Paris: Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Pont Alexandre III and many more.

Peer-editing: Let’s give feedback to other students!

During peer editing, you read another student’s writing and help him or her improve the ideas, organization, and language use. It is often easier to find ways to improve someone else’s writing than your own.

How do you do peer editing?

1. Always start with positive comments.

  • What was your favourite part?
  • What did you find interesting?
  • What did your friend do well?

2. Give suggestions for ways to improve the ideas and organization.

  • Is the main idea clear?
  • Are the sentences in a logical order?
  • Are the sentences easy to understand?

3. Are there any mistakes in:

  • Grammar
  • Spelling

4. When you are reading the article of your friend, be polite and offer helpful advice.

Copy-paste this part into the comments and simply continue writing in the same line to give feedback. Please fit the full feedback in one comment. We can’t wait to read your feedbacks!

P.S. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE GETS AT LEAST ONE FEEDBACK! IF SOMEONE ALREADY HAS 2 FEEDBACKS, PLEASE FIND ANOTHER ESSAY TO READ.
